Animal behaviour ~ The elephant cow and her baby crossed the road in front of us near Mopane Camp in Kruger NP. The road is built-up and the shoulder is quite steep on my side of the road. The mother walked right to the edge of the shoulder and then waited for baby to catch-up. He tried several times to cross over on her far side, which is also the steep side of the road. Every time he tried to get behind her back, she patiently stuck a foot in his face until he got the message that he must walk past her front, where her body could shield him, should he slip on the shoulder’s incline. Lesson learned, both mother and bay safely negotiated the incline and disappeared into the bush.

Beautiful image preserving a noteworthy and heartwarming observation!

"Heralded by her own trumpet, applauded by her own clapping ears, she strikes us as timeless and a bit sublime, aware and deliberative, peaceful and nurturing and deadly dangerous as needs arise. Wise only within the confines of her capabilities, like us. Vulnerable. As we all are." - Carl Safina in Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel
