One of Europe's most endangered butterflies, the Apollo is a large insect inhabiting mountain ranges. Here, this large female is muscling in to feed on one of the Devil's Bit Scabious flowers already being occupied by a Marbled White butterfly. Taken with D750 with Nikkor Micro 105mm. plus 1.4Tc @150mm f4, ISO 180, 1/4000 Sec., handheld 20/07/16.

Very nice image David
Thanks Tadzio --- I had been trying for years in Spain to capture an image of these big, floppy, butterflies and in the end I am very happy with this shot as it shows off the wing colourations pretty well .

He's like the Dragon in Avatar that's twice the size of everyone else... 🤣
It's certainly dwarves most of the other local residents by a mile, and can glide for quite a distance without a single wing beat, so to get a decent shot requires a lot of legwork !
