Thanks Howard, Callie and Yezdi.. If you look at the left top wing of both birds you can see the air disruption in the feathers indicating that the left wing would soon drop from lack of lift, which it did and both landed straight away.

Steve, they we about eye level banking towards me and I was on a small bank about 2 feet above the water. They landed about 20 or so yards further on.
