Astrophotography - Comet Neowise

Seems like Landscapes is a reasonable place for sky scape photos.. Had fun over the last month capturing some Neowise images. This one took some hiking to get the comet over the peaks. Image was captured on a D850 with an 85mm lens. It's two captures, each three minutes long, one for the foreground and one on a tracking mount for the sky and comet. I opted for the square aspect ratio to preserve a lot of sky and the comet's tail in the final composite image.

I'm sure a lot of folks out there captured Neowise images, rather than start a dozen threads how about posting them here and sharing this very cool astro event.

@DRwyoming really nice shot! I wish I had a tracker and an appropriate longer lens to have done a composite like this.

Here is NEOWISE over the Texas hill country. Nikon D850 and Nikon 20 mm f/1.8. Was battling quite a few clouds during the evening. Foreground shot about 20 mins after sunset, 5 seconds, f/8, ISO 64. Sky was captured about an hour later during a break in the clouds. Took a series of five 17 second exposures, f/2, ISO 800. Stacked in post using Starry Landscape Stacker and then blended with the foreground in Photoshop.

Here is a few I managed to shoot. The first one is a wide angle shot with D850, Sigma 14-24 f/2.8 with a stack of images as the ISS passed nearby and the moon setting over Potholes. The others were also shot over Potholes Reservoir with a Tamron 14-70mm f/2.8 stacked in SLS
Fun sharing them here, Steve Perry has shared so much info over the past few years it's nice to be here.

Awesome image @Agee I. like the way the clouds convey a sense of motion. Nice way to use the fading light to capture the foreground detail and the night shot for the stars and comet.

Nicely done!

Very cool @Hut nice way to incorporate the urban lights with the comet!

Keep 'em coming folks, it's really fun to see the same celestial object on pretty much the same nights from different places around the country (or hopefully from around the world).

Thanks, no tracker here but we had fun trying our best. Most of the lights are about 10 miles away in the Moses Lake area. Good fun

Nice shots but the first one makes me sad. I was supposed to be leaving for the Tetons at the end of August but the wife still won't get on a plane. So we're driving to the Smokey's. Hey at least they are still shorta mountains :)

Wow...I live in ST Louis and got some decent shots...I thought. I saw nothing like this. I need to get to dark skies next time!

Darker skies help a ton but the real game changer is using a tracking mount so that you can take 2 to 5 minute long exposures without star trailing. A lot of detail comes out when you can capture nine times as much light on the sensor with a 3 minute exposure instead of a 20 second exposure. But even then you really want dark skies or you end up capturing 9 times as much light pollution as well.

You got the green color, that is awesome considering the amount of light pollution where you are!.

Great images folks!

Here's an image taken a few nights before the one at the top of this thread. Living under my rock I had no idea a comet was around and was actually out in the field facing South East working some Milky Way images with the tracking mount when I turned turned around and saw the comet over Moran Canyon just to the North of Mt. Moran. So I turned everything around and captured a few images. Not quite content with the foreground I came back the next night and hiked around a bit to get everything to line up the way I wanted and captured this image. It's also a foreground/sky composite each 3 minutes long with the sky tracked to minimize star trails during the long exposure. It's shot with a D850 and the Sigma Art 35mm lens.

That must have been quite a shock to get a comet on screen not knowing about it. It's beautiful. I miss it...
