Australian Magpies are not closely related to northern hemisphere 'magpies' — they're back and white passerine birds, and that's about the end to the similarity!
Our magpies' closest relatives are the Australian Butcherbirds (also passerine songbirds) which, you've guessed it, aren't closely related to other 'butcherbirds'. Dare I add that, although our butcherbirds fill the same ecological niche as shrikes do elsewhere, they aren't related to shrikes, other than being in the habit of nicking gardening gloves that I've left unguarded and hanging them out to ripen high in a tree.
