A local celebrity of sorts, this female and her mate have occupied a nest in a cemetary for several years. Just a few weeks after this was taken, Rachel, the female pictured here, was hit by a tractor trailer on the interstate. After several weeks in a raptor rehab center, she was released and the hope was she'd be back at her nest in time to mate. As her mate did not know where she went, he took a new female who took exception to Rachel's return. A day after her release, Rachel tried to claim her nest and was attacked by the new, younger female. In the talon lock that followed, both plummeted to the ground, striking a concrete monument before hitting the ground. Rachel took the brunt of the hit, I heard a loud crack when they hit the monument. The other female flew off, but Rachel seemed to have had a second head trauma. She eventually flew off and in spite of several days searching for her, she hasn't been seen since. Photos later examined showed a nasty crack in her beak.
