These guys are not much more than 50 mm. They live under the sand and at dusk, you can start hearing them call. They are extremely hard to see as normally, the head stick just about 5 mm above the sand that is often the same color as the gecko. You try and locate the by sound. When you get lucky, they emerge totally.

Why they call? No idea, it must be a gecko thing. They generally call for claim territory, tell the ladies they are there etc. Here is a call from the internet.
