Bay Photo Printing

I’ve seen Bay Photo on this site as having a good reputation for quality work. We are looking to perhaps print some Milky Way or Neowise Comet photos we had taken. Has anyone seen the Xposer product that they show on-line.
Any comments as to how it might compare to a print on metal? Obviously it’s a whole different concept, any experiences with it, suggestions or comments? As always, I appreciate your opinions.
Thanks Bill Schone

I can't speak for Bay Photo, but I had a 45 x 17 inch metal print done by DuraPlaq in Longmont, CO, of a great shot of the Northern Lights I got in Iceland. Absolutely spectacular. The metal process provides a luminosity and detail I've never seen equalled in any traditional print. The stars and subtle colors of the lights literally glow. I've had a few other smaller, less expensive metal prints done of different subjects from other sources as well, and the color fidelity and crispness is highly impressive. The difference, in my understanding, is that just about any traditional print material will absorb some of the inks (if reproduced that way), while the hardness of metal prevents any absorption or diffusion. In my experience, metal would be a great choice for your astro images. You might want to try a couple of small proof prints on different materials for comparison if you're planning on investing a good deal of money in your prints. DuraPlaq sent me a small proof before I committed to a sizeable chunk of change for the final product. Good luck.

I've used Bay Photo for both metal and paper prints and they do an excellent job. If you have any hesitation give them a call and chat with them. I've had a metal collage printed once and that worked out great. I have not used the x-poser system but I'm sure they will stand behind it. I've also used another company to print on glass, Fractals, and I recently tried their system which is a simple shelf and the glass images can be stood on it and exchanged as needed. I like the concept and it, too, has worked out. Only way to know for sure if you'll like it is to try it.

Excellent, thank you.

I have been a Bay Photo customer for way over 25 years now
Always the best quality .

I live here in Santa Cruz in the early days 2002 or so Bay was a bit behind going digital.
I think alot of their customers are Professionals
When the demand came they quickly upped the services

Now days they are most definitely a big player in the Professional Printing game

My wall has Metal Prints (Absolutely spectacular)
And several canvas prints

I cannot say anything except for outstanding quality and great service

Thanks to those who recommended Bay Photo for photo prints. I have printed wildlife calendars for the past 6 years using several different photo print shops. I have never been all that happy with the print quality/color brightness as compared to how the photos displayed on my MacBook Pro. After reading several posts that suggested Bay Photo did excellent work, I decided at the last minute to give them a try. I ordered several copies of one of their standard format calendars with glossy finish on 12/20 thinking I would be lucky to get them by the 1st of the year. They arrived yesterday, the 24th, and I must say the quality is every bit as good as what my MacBook displays. I couldn't be happier with both the turnaround time and quality. Their prices are a little more than the shops I used in the past but well worth it. Thanks again for recommending them on this forum.

I have several prints done, including Milky Way, with the Xpozer system and I love it! The clarity on the print is wonderful, and using the system there is no need for additional framing. The frame system and prints are very lightweight, and you can exchange out the prints for a different one on the same frame if you want. I have printed up to 3’x4’on Xposer and it turned out great. I highly recommend it. I have also had regular prints and a thin wrap canvas from Bay Photo and they turned out great. I had one Milky Way Xposer that they somehow missed the foreground rocks color on and they replaced it immediately. But that is the only issue I have had.

Lisa, thank you sincerely for sharing your experience. That’s exciting. My niece has ordered a couple of pictures of mine to be printed on metal for Christmas from Bay, but I haven’t heard how they came out, I need to check. We have a picture that we had decided to print on metal, but I’ll certainly revisit the Xposer option. I like the concept. Thanks Bill
