It's all because of the way I have morphed into viewing. I discovered I was missing too many threads by trying to first read "Alerts" then "What's New" and the pages just kept adding up and I kept getting lost where I was at. Add to that, if you hit that horrid button "Mark Forum Read" all are marked so you don't know what you have missed. Now I just quickly glance at "Alerts" to see what is of interest to me, then go to "New Posts", start at the top and work my way down the list. A pattern forms so you instantly know when you see the page that comes up if you want to spend more time on it such as with "Birds in Flight -- Share your BIF Images" or just hit the back arrow to the "New Posts" page. If you click on the "New Posts" button, it will refresh the page so you don't see any read messages. If you just hit the refresh button, it marks threads as read, but are still visible.
