San Joaquin delta area, northern California. D500, 500PF lens, f/5.6, and only at 1/160...good thing he was still (ISO was at 1000) Unfortunately this heron was sitting on the top of a docked boat, not a nicely formed branch! It lives at the marina where my 18' boat is docked so hopefully I'll have another chance when it lands on something more natural than a boat roll bar! The lighting was great, the tin shed was reflecting light back onto it, and the distance away from the bird to the lens was ideal. I wish they all turned out like this one!
