Enclosing five pictures I took of the Blue Angels in Fargo, ND. First time working with “subject detection - Airplane”. Although it is challenging keeping a low flying, extremely fast jet in the viewfinder, it was an interesting day! I thought SD worked great!
Used Z8, Nikon 80-400 (latest) and shot manual ( mostly 5.6/6.3 at 1/3000 or 1/4000) w/auto ISO. Had to add exposure comp, as day was very cloudy/absolutely no sun!

Some really cool shots. I really don't know that you need subject detection for planes. They are fairly large. I took the attached photos with my D850 and 200-500, before I had a Z8 and therefore no subject detection used. I do use subject detection with the Z8, but I really don't think it's necessary. My two cents. These shots are all taken at El Centro NAS during winter training. Ken

I’m 76 years old and evidently your response time and steadiness is better than mine. Without the subject detection, it would have been unlikely I could keep the planes in focus. With SD, all I had to do was activate and keep plane(s) in view finder! Balance issues, based on neuropathy and a stroke I had 15 months ago factored in. If I’d been 65, instead of 75, it wouldn’t have been an issue. Be thankful for your youth and make the best of it!
