Brown (DeKay's) Snake

Brown (DeKay's) snakes are rarely seen, but actually quite common, snakes of eastern woodlands and wooded suburbs. I found this one on a dirt road a few days ago.

" Are these venomous? "
No, they're as innocuous as can be. If you pick them up, like many snakes, they'll release an awful smelling liquid from their vent and you'll wind up with a stinky hand. They're about 12 inches long when adult and are secretive, spending most of their lives under rocks, logs or fallen leaves searching for earthworms, insects and slugs.
