Ever since I saw my first picture of a Burrowing Owl, I wanted to see and photograph these little birds. Back at the end of December, 2018 I nagged my husband to the point that he finally gave in. Soooo . . . off to Florida we went in April of 2019 for a week so I could photograph them.
From the first time I saw one of these cuties "up close & personal", I was in love.
This shot was taken close to the end of that trip. Early that morning I'd set up in my usual spot and observed papa owl go off, bring back an insect, and feed it to mama. Mom remained in the burrow until dad showed up with the bug, and then she'd pop up just long enough to delicately accept the offering. This went on a couple of times before the lightbulb went off in my head that all I needed to do to get the shot was to point my lens at the entrance of the burrow and wait. From the legs visible in the photo, I believe it was some species of beetle this time around.
This shot is the result of watching for patterns of behavior, waiting patiently, and being ready. Note: This was taken from a distance with a long lens and is a severe crop.
