Last week I took a trip around the California Central Valley to photograph wildlife. I started at Gray Lodge Wildlife Area near Gridley, then took Hwy. 20 across to Colusa WLR (I usually stop at Sacramento WLR but passed on it this time), staying in the area for two days. After that I headed down Hwy. 5 to check out Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, absolutely nothing there, not even a small bird! And then onward to Consumnes River Preserve and Woodbridge Ecological Reserve (North Unit).
I photographed most of the usual birds in the various areas, this time the Cormorants were particularly helpful in getting several nice shots. I also photographed a small red male bird that I had never seen before, a Vermilion Flycatcher, that was off-course, it's normal area is Southern CA, Arizona and New Mexico (All About Birds says they "barely reach the southwestern U.S.) so that was of interest.
A few of those shots, will also post a second selection, and a shot of a hawk with lunch, enjoy! Also, if you know which Heron the brown one hunting in the reeds is, let me know. At first I thought a Green Heron but it could be a juvenile Black Heron (?), but the markings seemed different, way too brown. or probably a female Bittern.
