Camera and lens - professional cleaning

I recently got my camera and lens cleaned up (mainly for dust) by authorised service center here in India. Both are now looking like brand new!

I was just wondering how often (if at all) do you get the lens/camera cleaned up professionally? The cost of doing it in India is not much (~ US$17 for Z8+180-600mm).

Any suggestions?

I recently traded in my mirrorless camera. With the value agreed to, I asked the technician about the sensor: perfect with not a trace of dust I was told.

I was then shown the sensor. After constant use over three and a half years, it was the first, and only, time that I ever saw that camera’s sensor.

Is there a lesson here? Perhaps.

I send my Nikon Z cameras to Nikon USA for a check every two years at the latest. Sooner than that if needed. I’ve not had to have a lens serviced in quite a few years, and that time was because I dropped it.

In recent years, I have sent my Z bodies once a year — usually at year end — to Nikon for inspection, screw tightening, other light maintenance and cleaning. I also sent two bodies in this year after a very dusty trip to Botswana In April and May. I have not sent a lens in yet.

I hope to catch any issues with my bodies this way before they become a problem. I send them more for this than cleaning, as dust on the sensor has not been a big issue with my Z9 and Z8s, given their sensor shields. Dust was more an issue with my Z7/Z6 I and II bodies.

This year there was corrosion on the hot shoe of my Z9 and Nikon replaced it. They also replaced the rubber covering on the Z9 which had been wearing in places.

I pay for the mid level NPS membership. This includes three free clean and check services each year. I send my Z9 and Z8 in each year for the basic service check including sensor cleaning. I send my 400 TC 2.8 in every second year and upgrade to the full calibration check. I have several shorter lenses, prime and zoom, that have never been sent for a factory check, They are mostly used in studio or indoor venues so they see little water or dust. Out of pocket for shipping to the service center. Nikon pays for return shipping.

I needed to have a tilt shift lens cleaned to remove fungus that was the result of improper storage by previous owners. Some inexpensive zoom lenses will suck in outside dust and so may need to be cleaned.

In the days before mirrorless it was often needed to have cameras and lenses recalibrated as the offset was critical for accurate autofocus. With mirrorless cameras that is no longer needed.

Hi James. About how long does it take for Nikon to turn it around for you? I just sent my Z9 in for Premium maintenance since its part of NPS membership now (First time I've finally taken advantage of this service). I'm curious how long it takes them to do the service.

For reference, I'm not NPS. I sent my Z9 to Nikon USA for premium maintenance in May 2024. Turnaround was eleven days from drop-off at FedEx to receipt of the camera from Nikon at my home.
