Camera up-grade D500 D850 or the new Nikon Z 6II

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

In my opinion, if you shoot wildlife and landscape the D850 is king (right now). Depending on your glass, the Z6II might not have enough pixel density for wildlife (reach/cropping). The Z7II might be a contender but it hasn't really been tested yet.

What's the budget? what your experience level? What kind of Glass do you currently own? the Z6II is not a good choice for wildlife IMHO.. ( based on the limited data we have on auto focus, and the ability to NOT program AF point and Groups via external buttons.

Honestly, I'd wait if you can, we just don't know enough about the new Z cameras yet. Also, it really depends on your priorities. For heavier landscape use, the Z makes a lot of sense, for heavier wildlife use, it does look like the D850 might still be the best decision. Still, unless you need it right now, I'd hold off until there are some reviews from people not on Nikon's payroll about the new Z cameras :)

Not sure how quickly you want to do the upgrade. D850 (as I type this) has a $500 rebate going on. I don't know how long it is slated to last.

I did an upgrade from D7200 to a D500 back I January. I did get a "can't resist" price buying it used from a friend with only 20,000 shutter actuations. Knowing the entire history of the camera and a price that was too good to pass up steered me to the D500. I was thinking D850 for what that is worth.

Best wishes in your quest for a new camera body.

Out of those three specifically for what you suggest you want it for I'd pick the D850, but waiting a week or two is a good idea. I'm considering the Z6II as a low light camera for static subjects but I would not replace my D850 with it.

I'm currently using a D7200 and going to upgrade. I've narrowed it down to D500 D850 or the new Nikon Z 6II Mostly for wildlife and landscape.
The way things are i will wait for another 6 months before upgrading for the following reasons
-Nikon has not released even one video for Z ii bodies for birding which will be the ultimate test for its AF including its performance in burst shooting
-There is rumor that D 880 may be released in which case D 880 may be a much better option for wild life & birding since one can use exiting DSLR glass.Even if one does not buy the D 880 one can get cheper D 850 bodies as is the norm
-No third party wild life photographer (for me it would be Steve only ) has reviewed the Z ii bodies yet
-There is also a rumor that a 600 Pf lens may be released by Nikon though it is not clear whether it would be for F or Z bodies

a 600 PF? oh I'm sure many photographers (like me) would jump on it and buy it without a flinch of an eye.
that would also be a good reason to make the jump to Mirrorless, in case it is only for Z Mount.

A lot depends on the type of bird photography you do, for really fast action the D500 is difficult to equal. The D850 is not too far behind, for me, the D850 does have the advantage of having several sensor size modes to select, providing a fairly large range of frames to cover images that are too close, which is where the D500 with the 500 PF fitted limits close up objects. The Z6 II would probably have too few megs to permit cropping bird images. I have my order for the Z6 II in and expect to get it this week, my reason for purchasing it is to shoot birds and wildlife video, both my D500 and D850 leave much to be desired in functionality when shooting video.
