Can anyone do Nikon NX Studio Noise Reduction with Z9?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Is anyone with a Z9 able to check and see if Nikon NX Studio allows you to perform Noise Reduction on Z9 RAW files?
The function is available on all my previous cameras (D750 and several Nikon 1 cameras) but is greyed out on all my Z9 RAW files. I have contacted Nikon support a few weeks ago and after several calls they are still working on a solution but are stumped.

If anyone could check this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. As you can see below, noise reduction is available on my D750 RAW files but not the Z9.

The weird thing is I can even get noise reduction on Z9 JPGs (!) which is not supposed to be possible but it's not available on the RAW files which is just bizarre.
For the record, the Studio NX noise reduction has been great for me in the past. Maybe not as good as the latest Topaz or DeepPrime but good enough. But noise reduction is absolutely needed for my shooting.

From the manual:
Select this option to enable noise reduction. You can then choose an option for [Method] and a noise-reduction amount. A small amount of noise reduction is applied even when this option is not selected.[Method]
The options available vary with the camera used to create the current picture.

  • [Faster]/[Better Quality]/[Better Quality 2013] (RAW pictures only): Choose [Faster] for faster processing, [Better Quality] or [Better Quality 2013] for higher-quality results.
  • TIP: [Better Quality 2013]This option excels in reducing color noise at short wavelengths and over evenly-colored areas of the image. Selecting [Better Quality 2013] displays additional [Luminance] and [Color] items, allowing intensity and sharpness to be adjusted separately for each of these parameters.

The NX Studio Manual gives some guidance on this see pages 148 and 149 https://download.nikonimglib.com/ar...564Y2bBW09/D-NXSTDO-010700BF-___EN-_R02__.pdf

It states that the options vary with the camera and that "Camera's noise reduction" only appears when no other options are available. So the Z9 has fewer options than some other cameras. NX Studio treats Z7II noise reduction in the same way as the Z9. The Faster/Better Quality etc options are not available with either.

With a nef from my Z9 I have the same screen as you show, and noise reduction is definitely available. It is more noticeable if you select High rather than Normal. I do not know the difference between Type A and Type B, and the manual gives no guidance on this.

The quality of the noise reduction is clearly inferior to that of DxO.

The options being shown are identical to those available in-camera on the Z9. You’re getting a noise reduction option but it’s not what’s available for raw images from earlier cameras.
