I want advice on whether forum members think a Canon R6 with its 20 MP sensor is equal to a Nikon D5/D6 in terms of IQ--I know it's not anywhere near the build quality/durability of the Nikon's but image quality plus the ability to focus extremely fast and high frame rate I would think make it a worthy competitor--what sayeth the jury?

Speaking about the sensor, I was surprised to see the dynamic of the D6-D5 compared to the Canon 1DX III and R6 (looks the same) at 100 iso...

I think it depends on the type of shooting you do and where you place your priorities. In looking for a comparison of the R6 to the Nikon D5/D6, we might think it’s all about sensor size, frames/sec, AF system, memory cards and buffer depth. If the priority is a camera with a focus system and video capabilities that compare well to the Nikon DSLR flagships, then the R6 is probably a good choice.

You also mention IQ; how important is IQ? How important are system measures like cost and availability of mirrorless lenses of interest?

I’ve been comparing the R5 to what I can find out about production Nikon Z 6/7 ii’s. The Canon R5/6 Face/Eye detection and tracking system is terrific. I favor the R5 because I crop heavily for BIF shots at a distance. So, I looked at the R6, but dynamic range and pixels on the subject were a concern. Another part of the decision for me is which system will get to 200-600 or 600mm prime lenses first?

Depending on what you plan to use the R6 for, the Z 6ii compares quite favorably. This video compares the two systems realistically in terms of measures important in actual use and points out some of the subtleties between the systems (and the R5/R6).
