hi guys new here (1st post)
i have just purchased a new canon r7 mirrorless camera, took it out today for the first time and i found that the camera turns off after a while if its not used , but the only way i can turn it back on is to remove and replace the battery, so my question is is there a setting on the r7 that i can use to stop this problem or is it a problem only canon can deal with?

thx for any help

First, welcome to the forum.
I have not personally had this issue with my R7.
A couple things to consider.
1) are you on the most recent firmware? Current is 1.6.
go to the wrench menu screen 6 select firmware option and it will show what version you're on. If it is older than 1.5, you should update. One of the firmware updates did address some issue where the battery had to be removed to get the camera to wake up.

2) if you're on 1.5 or 1.6, then check wrench menu page 3 and go to power saving. Check your settings here. I have mine set as follows:
screen dimmer: 20 sec
screen off: disable
auto power off: 10 min
viewfinder off: 1 min.

I suspect one of these will fix your problem. If not, get back with us here, I'm sure there will be other suggestions. Most on this forum shoot Nikon but there are also a lot of us who shoot Canon too.

Hope this helps
Jeff

Oh, one other tip, with the R7 and really any of the mirrorless cameras, get into the habit of pressing one of the buttons as you bring the camera to your eye, (I usually press AF On since I'm using back button focus but any of the buttons will work. With varying degrees of speed, it takes a moment for these cameras to wake up after they go to sleep. My R7 is only a second or so which means all systems are active by the time I get it to my eye and ready to shoot. My wife's R10 seems about the same. A buddy had an original Z6 and it was slower (about 1.5 to 2 seconds). I think some firmware corrected that with the Nikon.

Bottom line, that is something I got used to and it's now just muscle memory.

Hope you get it straightened out.

With you being on most recent firmware and having menu settings set up, I would suggest contacting Canon service. Something doesn't seem right. Always start troubleshooting with the easy stuff first which you have already done. Unless someone here has more suggestions, I'd contact Canon. Is the camera still under warranty or CarePak warranty?

Please let us know how it works out. Hope it gets fixed quickly for you.

The part that doesn't seem normal is having to remove the battery. It is normal for the camera to sleep or shut off after the time you set in the menu has passed, but it should wake up with a shutter half press or with toggling the power button. If that doesn't work then as folks said I would contact Canon for warranty repair.

@Adey

This has to be a settings issue. Auto power off usually just puts the camera to sleep and as has been said mirrorless cameras take a while to wake up, so first make sure that this is not the issue. Removing the battery will often wipe some current settings, like on my Nikon ISO will revert back to 100 if I have pushed it up then turned the camera off.

If still no luck do a factory reset. You might have disturbed a setting. If you know other photographers they might be able to spot a problem or speak to Cannon support.
