Can't Take Video

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I have a D7100, D750 and a D500 and I am unable to take video with either one. I figure I must have a setting that is preventing the video function but I have been unable to figure out what is wrong. On the D750 is just takes a picture. When I put the shutter release to start the video a line goes through the record icon when in live view. I am looking for help. I have done multiple searches and have yet to find a solution. Help!

Have used the D7100 and D500 to take video (don't have a D750). First you put it in live view (which sounds like you did?) by turning the knob in the back and then the mirror is up and the screen in the back should show what is in front (ie. the view finder no longer works since mirror up). But you don't use the shutter release to start taking video. Instead of pressing the shutter button, you press the button on top next to it that has a red dot. Try that and let us know if it works to start the video recording.

Welcome to BCG!

Thank you Ricardo00. That did the trick! I have never tried taking video until today.
Have fun! I found it best to do video on a tripod and then try to take video of something that isn't moving a lot. Also try using a small aperture to increase the DOF (which is often necessary anyway since the shutter speed should normally be only twice the fps.) So if you shoot at 30 fps/ then the shutter speed should be 1/60. Show us some of your videos when you get something you like!
PS. I used my Nikon cameras for many years to do wildlife video. The mirrorless Nikons are easier to do video since one can use the EVF and they will track animals better, but your cameras can get some decent videos as well! This is one I used the D500 for:

Very nice ricardo00! I wanted to take video of freezing soap bubbles. We don't get temperatures conducive for that very often here and I think my window of opportunity might be gone. I'll have to try video on something else now.
