Bird Island at Lambert's Bay on South Africa's West coast has a large breeding colony of Cape Gannets and at this time of the year it's wall to wall fledging chicks. A hide has been built on the island which is accessible via a causeway (part of the harbour wall). I acquired a pristine D500 and was anxious to get some images of birds in flight. This was taken with the D500 and a 70-300 Dx lens as I thought that would be plenty of reach at the short range. With hindsight I should have carried the 200-500 but being with a non photographer going back later wasn't an option. 1/2500, f6.3, ISO 180
