Capture One Users

Hi folks. I've been a C1 user for some time and have reluctantly come to the conclusion that their business focus has become tighter and tighter on the fashion, portrait , and studio side of the business. All of the updates I've seen in the last year have covered things like tethering, face masking and that sort of thing. As my interests lie in wildlife/nature/landscape work I feel like I'm being left behind. Has anyone else had that sensation?

I use CaptureOne but I don’t exclusively do wildlife so I haven’t felt quite the same. I do think they have been prioritizing their bread and butter clients. I haven’t been happy with their pace of change, either, for the higher price. I’m contemplating using Bridge (free) and NX Studio and Affinity as my solution when my license expires. Although I do have a coupon for a free version of CaptureOne that I haven’t redeemed. So maybe I’ll do that. I have until May to see what happens.

My subscription expired a little over two months ago. I know I would not go back to LR. So I tried Affinity and gave DXO Photolab another try. In the end I renewed C1 when they offered some small discounts for black friday.

While I agree that their masking and a few other changes seemed to be more focused on studio photographers, I still find their subject detection very good. And think the tools it offers are excellent.

That is what has me fence sitting. For most of my purposes, C1 works reasonably well. I've considered going back to LR, but really don't want to. What's annoying is paying $200 a year and essentially getting nothing in return. As it stands, my subscription fee is subsidizing the development of some cool tools for a type of photography I don't do. In retrospect I probably should have opted for the perpetual license model. There is always the option of buying the perpetual at a small discount, which I am also considering. Thanks for the comment.

I feel like you exactly. I also don’t like the way they charge me for my renewal, since I am Canadian. Three years later I am still paying more than the price on their web. I asked for explanation and they don’t reply to my question. My renewal date is the end of June and I am going to cancel it. I have Adobe CC, it cost me a lot less than C1 and I get much more.

I use Capture One Pro and have the latest version, and I am mainly wildlife/birder and landscapes. I don't do subscription but buy outright. I don't feel as though I am being left out due to advancements in other areas that I don't necessarily use so much as I think there are tweaks in all areas when there is an upgrade. For me, Capture One Pro already offers the best IQ output and features that work for me. At this stage, I will continue to use it and buy it as it is the best RAW converter/post process there is, IMO.

I understand some of the stated frustrations and discontent with the Capture One business model and also what seems like more and more emphasis on fashion, portrait and modeling, etc. However, CP-1's AI masking and other masking tools of recent vintage are exceptionally good - detailed masking of a model with a big head of hair is similar in many ways to that of wildlife with hair too. Hair is hair whether it's a frizzy fashion model or a shaggy bear et al. AI masking is simply a great too. And, as Lance stated, the output is great. I'll continue to use it even though I cringe once a year as I re-subscribe and see the credit card bill. Anyway ... I moved away from LRC years ago with no regrets. CP-1 with a dose of DXo Elite Deep Prime XD NR is a powerful process that extends the high ISO useable boundary. Soldier on. We all have different personal preferences and that's OK.

Yeah, I definitely won’t go back to Adobe at this point. I’m curious to see how C1 changes over the next 6 months. One benefit, though, is after 5 years you can end and keep that version as a perpetual license.

I’ll probably ride the fence for a bit longer. I sent a message to the folks at C1, asking what their mid term plans for the future were. No reply yet and I don’t really expect one.

In the grand scheme of things, $193 is not a bank breaker.

You are 100% correct. I contacted them and mentioned their new features vs the latest Adobe, ie are you guys making the same SW improvements.

They aren’t. They aren’t too involved at all in wildlife etc, it’s fashion etc

I’m likely hopping to PS/LR

I’m getting on in years and suspect my Z8 will be my last camera. I’ll probably do some low level cost-benefit analysis over the coming weeks. I don’t have great feelings about doing business with adobe again. My last version of LR was 6 and it was time to divorce them. C1 does what I want so I don’t think I’ll jump ship. I don’t want to pay 4 more years of rent either, just to get a free version of what they’re selling then. So I’m leaning toward converting my subscription to a perpetual license and having done with it.

I am going to do like you. When the time of renewal comes, I will end my subscription and get the perpetual licence. I only use C1 pro for my medium format Mamiya which I hardly use it now. Capture One, I believe it is the only software that can work with Moss Raw ( Mamiya and Phase One Raw). Otherwise you have to convert the moss raw in DNG to open it in Lightroom and Photoshop. For other Raw, like for my Nikon cameras, I am still using Lightroom because I am used to it.
And honestly, I am happy with Adobe with all the updates and the software that are included in their Photography Subscription, is still at a price of 12.99 +tax per month for Canadian and has not increase since 2013 and it is still cheap compare to everything else. I know they announced a small increase, but it won’t affect the Photography Subscription 20Gb for yearly paiement.

The latest upgrades make the AI masking tools fly on my older iMac - went from waiting 20-30 seconds to almost instantaneous (once previews have been generated). These tools also seem to be more accurate and more useful for landscape and street photography. Makes me happy enough to stick with C1 for another round, but I have been wondering the same question about their business model.

I got a nice reply to my query from the C1 folks. They were very up front that at present they are putting emphasis on the studio/fashion side of things and will be doing the same for a while.

The note apologized for the situation, but cited market forces as the driving factor. That isn’t news, but the guy (whomever he was) was very nice and (call me a sucker) that makes a difference. (To me)

Still fence sitting. But I really dislike Adobe.

It does make sense that they would want to differentiate their offering from Adobe’s and their direction does the trick. On the bright side the improvements may help us indirectly and sometimes directly for wildlife. I get the sense that they will be focused on machine learning algorithms rather that generative ones so I don’t think they will have improved noise and sharpening, though. But if they do end up using those in some way that would be a big boost.

Exactly what they told me. Honestly, I saw this coming at least a few years ago, but hoped this wasn't the case, it is, and off to Adobe for now, as much as I despise rentware greed.

I still have until the end of the month to fish or cut bait. I’ll run some numbers, but in the bigger picture that’s not that big a deal. I’ll either continue the subscription or opt out for perpetual license. For what I do, C1+PureRaw4+Helicon are a pretty solid foundation.

I've used C1 since version 3 and still find it to be the best processor out there (for my usage). I shoot about 85% landscape & 15% wildlife/birds. I agree that it's a bit disappointing to see most of their efforts going toward fashion/tethered, etc. but I can't blame them for that since that's their primary market. I've considered going over to LR Classic but I just don't care for LR very much. LR doesn't seem as user friendly and I don't want to go through the learning curve either. I have DXO PhotoLab 8 but I haven't really experimented with it yet. At this time, I plan on staying with C1 as it still does a great job and I feel so comfortable with it.

The only "real" complaint I have with C1 is the lack of a base layer sharpening amount being applied in the Cull feature. I love the idea of the Cull feature but wiithout a base line sharpening applied, I find it worthless. I have complained to C1 (LOTS of people have complained about this) so I'm hopeful they will add that in a future update.

I can't disagree more guys. I just follow this guy (Paul Riffer on YT) all the time and almost all his edits are landscapes and cityscapes with deep use of masking, layers, etc. C1 is a perfect match 4 landscape. I don't know what U searching for more edit tools there. Just take a look at His last Live editing if You want. Thnx. https://www.youtube.com/live/E6epAuuBl_Q?si=mshnkY9LOQGKACDt
