Caracal, Felis caracal, Rooikat ~ 5 sightings is 30 years!; not an easy cat to see! This one in shot in very bad light @ 11:44 on a hot and dry January noon in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. My wife spotted him under the camelthorn tree. There was just a narrow window to try and to get his face as the wind was constantly blowing two leaves trough his face. The BG was totally washed out. Luckily, ACR can now work wonders on NEF, or I have learned a lot in 7 years! The other image is from Kruger NP this year when he walked right pass us across the road, about 100 m from Letaba Camp gate! Just walked pass, never stopped or turned his head!
This cat can jump 2,4 m high and is a very efficient killer and also known as a varmint in sheep country where they are relentlessly hunted.
D800; 400 F/2.8 + 1.4 TC: F/6.3; 1/800; ISO 1000
D500; 500PF; F/14; 1/800; ISO 1/1250 - the F/14 was because I was shooting something else a few minutes before and forgot to dial back, even after many years of shooting, I still do this occasionally!
