Cavity Nesters - Please share your images

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Just in North America, over 80 species of birds nest in cavities. Non-avian species also make tree cavities their homes. Please share your images from around the world.

American Kestrel
Great series BC but I really like the first shot of the Kestrel with spread wings. Really nice.

I love the Northern Flickers too, definitely a favorite bird that comes around occasionally but is generally pretty shy. Here's one that stuck around for some portraits.

Nikon D70, 300mm f/4, 1/45", ISO 320 (shot through the bedroom window :))

Nuttall's woodpecker pair excavated a new nest cavity about 18" from their previous year's nest. Western bluebird pair quickly claimed the vacated cavity. The woodpeckers proceeded to peaceably raise a new family. The bluebirds spent much of their time and energy harassing the woodpeckers' arrivals and departures. I began to have doubts that the bluebirds would ever actually nest that season but eventually they settled in and successfully raised a brood.

Cool interaction of two great species. Nice backstory on those photos!

The adult male bluebird disappeared during the nestling period. A young bird who fledged earlier in the season began assisting with food deliveries.
