CFexpress Card getting hot

I am using a CFexpress card (SanDisc Extreme Pro 128 GB) with a ProGrade reader. When I get done downloading and initial editing of my shots (big files-45 MP) both the card and reader are hot. Not so hot as to be not handable, but much hotter than the SD cards and readers I have been used to using. Is this normal? The card is never hot coming out of the camera.
It may take an hour or more to do the initial culling and downloading of my shots ( >1000 45 MP files).

Cards can warm up when used, so I don't think it's unusual. My advice though would be to download everything and then cull / edit. I wouldn't do it with the images on the card. That way, it's just a simple copy step. It'll still warm up the card a little, but hopefully not as much as you're experiencing now.

Just a suggestion but check the Card reader after it been sitting empty.. My Sony XQD reader was warm even just sitting empty. I now unplug it from my USB port when not in use.

I use XQD cards with a Sony XQD card reader for images taken wwith my D850 and D500. Yes, the card and the card reader will get warm when the images are being downloaded. My practice is to download the images. Then I click on the USB icon (Windows computers) until Safe to Remove shows. Then I remove the card reader with the card still in it. If I were to leave the card reader plugged in to my USB port the card reader stays warm. Like Steve recommends I download all images to my computer. Then I cull.

Thank you everyone. Normally I too download my shots before doing any culling, editing, etc. This is a new camera and I am taking literally 1000's of shots trying different AF modes, custom buttons etc, so I know that 99% of my shots are automatic culls; hence my approach doing this from the card rather than the downloaded file. I can see now that this approach may have other disadvantages so will go back to downloading first even with the many "junk" shots.
