So how did the chase end ? success or not for the cheetah ? I was wondering was speed is needed : you used 1/5000, is that the norm for this type of chase, also considering distance to subject ?
The chase was successful. This photo actually doesn’t show the subject that is being chased, a gazelle which i couldn’t fit in the frame. I used 1/5000 because this sequence was shot from a moving vehicle. Ideally, I would have preferred to have shot this using my telephoto lens but the guide got over excited when the chase started and he was rushing to position the vehicle ahead of the animal so we get a better “spot” after the cheetah caught the gazelle…there’s no way I could have used a telephoto lens from a fast moving jeep and got any decent image so i quickly picked my 70-200 and increased the shutter speed and i guess paid off…if I was shooting from a static vehicle, i would have probably used 1/3200 or 1/4000 to be on the safer side…I generally prefer pushing my shutter speed by a stop vs ideal shutter speed when photographing action as i can always fix a noisy image vs a blurry image :)
