Circular polarizers

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I’ve been considering a circular polarizer as an economic alternative to a full Lee or Hoya system. Are they worth it from a durability perspective? I’ve read they easily scratch and are tough to clean. Any truth in that, or would you recommend one to a guy on a serious budget 😊 Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I’ll research both. I was looking at a Kenko C-PL here at a local shop. That said, I read a review that the guy found even wiping down the glass left light swirl damage. Yuck!

I only use Nikon CPL filters but I hear very good reviews of the Breakthrough X4 filters.
It’s said they’re well-built and are most colourneutral while not the most expensive ones.

Thanks. I’ve been looking at the above mentioned filters a moment ago. They both focused on weather durability (water and such) which I like. I’ll have look at the Nikon you suggested right now. Thanks. Update...good reviews at B&H!

I used to use the Nikon cpol's until Breakthrough started. I started with their ND as it is very color neutral and was so happy I replaced my Nikon cpols with Breakthrough X4's. They are also color neutral, very well built and have larger knurls along the outside filter ring that make them much easier to rotate, mount and remove. They claim a lifetime warranty. One of my Nikon Cpols de-laminated after about 5 years and Nikon would not do anything. Clean Breakthrough filters with Eclipse (Yep, the sensor cleaning solution). I've had my Breakthrough cpols for over 3 years, no issues.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

I am using B&W Kaesemann as well. Build and Coating is top notch from my perspective. I find them really easy to clean providing you use the proper tool. Never had any issues with getting dust or anything between the two layers. Just sold a 77mm that was 8 years old and the buyer was amazed that to him it still looked and felt like brank new, although it was the primary polarizer I have used on most of my lenses for most of this time. The only reason I switched was that I require another size after getting hands on a 24-70 f2.8E which has 82mm thread. The other lenses I have a set of step-up rings to get directly from xx mm to 82mm. This helps to keep the cost down and and teh same time minimizes the risk of vignetting if going smaller than 24mm.

Edited my former post, really thought I wrote drop-in filters.
Never the less I’m using Nikon filters for many years now, never had any issue with any of them colours are a bit warmer but as a matter of fact I like that, but as always that’s a personal thing. (People even buy ‘extra warm’ CPLs for good money like the Singh Ray filters.)

@east54
HERE’s another thorough test on a lot of CPL filters.

@Steve somehow text disappears when you’re using the site with a smartphone like I have to do at the moment. (We got notice It will take at least another 3 months before we get a cable internet connection at our house)
Very annoying especially when writing long posts, including names, manually selecting quotes etc.

Thanks

You couldn't be lazier than me. I spend all my energy finding ways to be lazy... 🤣 🤣

Seriously though, it's easy as to do. Literally plug and play so long as your hotspot is turned on. Had to use it for 2 years because I wasn't in a position to change my circumstances. Only downside of it was needing to increase my data amount on the phone. Even now, I sometimes switch over to it because I get better download speeds with 4g

That's weird - like when you're posting or just viewing?

@Steve when I’m posting.
Not when I write a ‘straight’ post.
Quote -> answer period is no problem but when I’m modifing a quote so to say ‘pull it apart in multiiple quotes’ using @names and the like I need often to retype text simce it disappears.

OK, I was playing with it and can't seem to duplicate the issue. I took the quote above, played with it, added user @names, etc, nothing disappeared.

There is an update to the board I'm planning to do in the near future, if it's a bug that'll probably fix it.

Also - which theme do you use - the light or dark?

Okay Steve I’m using the dark theme but I was thinking it might be the Browser? (Duckduckgo)
Will try Safari and see wether the issues duplicate.
Will let you know, thanks!

Talking CPL's, I purchased a medium-priced Tiffen CPL for use on my Z7 using the 24-70mm. Either it's 'broke' or there is something up when viewing through the EVF....but when I turn the filter I see no difference. And, I have tested it with sun at right angle.

Thoughts?

Not sure what's going on, but I'd start with the simple test. Take the polarizer off your lens and hold it up in front of your eyes and rotate it. If there's glare in the image you should see substantial differences when rotating it. Try things like seeing if blue skies darken (not the best use of a CPL but an easy test), whether you can see through the glare on water and other tests. Of course don't wear your own polarized sunglasses while doing these eyeball tests.

Do you have by any chance turned
Apply settings to live view” off?

If you turn it off, your camera will boost the EVF to the same brightness each time no matter your exposure
