Probably some last insects before the winter but my first insect macros with the 105 mm VR Nikkor Micro along with flowers in purple :)
I actually used my BIF settings with AF-C, back button focus, no tripod etc. even though all the macro books say use only manual and on tripod. No chance though going according to the schoolbooks with these still busy insects. I still hope you like the images. The last image is a flower only, but the color fits in.

Best,

Mike

Great images Mike and great use of your new macro lens.

When you get into crazy close macro work or focus stacking then things like careful composition and solid supports (tripod) can become very valuable but I've shot plenty of living macro handheld and with today's AF and higher ISO performance it's a lot more feasible than it used to be. So use what works for the situation.

Great stuff and great demonstration of the optical quality your new lens delivers!

Great photos, handholding didn't hurt those at all. Using a tripod to take photos of bees or syrphid flies on flowers would be an exercise in patience and frustration as the insects landed on other flowers, air currents moved the flowers or the insect landed and left before you tripped the shutter.

Yes, for sure - closer up and higher magnification, then there will be no way around a tripod and everything else important in macro photography. A lot for me to learn and try out yet as a beginner. I was still impressed by these rather quick and dirty results. The D500 and 105 mm VR combo are really terrific.
