The jacanas are well know for their outrageously large feet. The long toes on their feet spread their weight out their weight over a large surface area, making to possible for them to walk on floating vegetation without sinking. As they walk , they glean through the floating vegetation looking for small invertebrates and seeds to eat. Comb-crested Jacanas are found on islands from the Philippines to New Guinea and on northern Australia.I tried to include images that really showed off the feet of these jacanas. Note how the three forward pointed toes have long bones and a long nail and the rear facing foot toe has two bones but an even longer nail. Males and females are similar in appearance, with the female being a bit larger. Juveniles lack the colorful, fleshy crest that gives the species its name, but they develop the huge feet quite early, as seen in the last image.
