No just a single shot hand held as I almost never use a tripod
Were you on a workshop or by yourself…and if the former did most have tripods, monopods, or nothing? Going on the Steve sponsored trip in July and wondering whether to take the extra weight myself. I have to do some testing…but wonder if a focus stack on a monopod or handheld would even work…don’t know how fast the frames are taken for one of those with a Z8/9 but ifmits pretty quick then some alignment images in PS before stacking might work just fine.

It was a photo workshop, but I relied on my own experience and just used the workshop to get to various sites. I find that most workshops do not give me the type of attention I would like as they guides are pulled in so many directions. That is not to be critical of the guides it's just the reality of the situation you find yourself in. I did find the evening discussions of photos to be much more valuable.
As I said previously, I did not do a photo stack of this frog but just tried to adjust my plan of shooting instead. What I do most times is take a series of shots when at a slow shutter speed to make sure one or two are in focus. I also am fortunate that I have been able to hand hold my camera steady with minimal effort at shutter speeds as low as 1/8 of a second so that combined with taking multiple shots in a row assures me a few that are sharp.
Most of the people did not have a tripod but a few had monopods that were use occasionally. I did have monopod with me but never used it.
I do not think that photo stacking will work in an environment like the Costa Rica jungle. I believe that it would work best with a stationary subject and a tripod, but I am no expert.

Thanks…I answered my own question about stacking and handheld…on the Z8 and presumably the 9 as well the viewfinder blacks out so it appears a tripod is necessary as no viewfinder means no keeping the subject centered as best as one can so no aligning images. I will have to play with wider apertures and slow shutter bursts to see how that works for me. Like you, I rarely use a tripod except for waterfalls but they do offer support albeit at the cost of flexibility and quickness to move around…at this point I’m planning on taking one though.
