While we photographed lots of bears, probably the most intriguing interaction I saw was between a hunting coyote and a sandhill crane guarding its colts. Over the years I've seen sandhills run off coyotes, but not this time. The coyote waded into the marsh pond in Yellowstone's Slough Creek and attacked the parent on guard duty, even leaping into the air after it. Not sure if this was an attempt on the adult's life, or just a bluff to push it away - either way, it worked and one of the two colts fell victim to the coyote. A hundred yards away and in brutal afternoon light, still, the encounter was noteworthy.
