If you'd like to know why a young Sandhill Crane is called a colt ... just look at those legs! This colt is just about 4 weeks old.If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).
If you'd like to see a slide show: https://www.dropbox.com/s/68svniftt8r8zjb/Sandhill Cranes ver. 2.mp4?dl=0 (With Sound) I started visiting the nest once or twice a week as soon as I was told about it and then, since I didn't know exactly which day the eggs would hatch, every day as the hatching day approached. I was extremely polite and the parents got used to me sitting near the nest. When the colts were born, the parents started taking walks with them. The colts need the exercise to keep their growing leg muscles toned. The parents knew who I was and permitted me to get fairly close - it was a wonderful experience. There were times they actually brought the colts over to me ... it was magic! In a tragic accident, one of the colts was killed by a falling branch, during a storm.baby is growing, very nice!
