I used a Canon EF 100-400 with a Sigma 1.4 Extender. After years of messing around with lenses I now use the Canon 100-400 Mk2, and a Canon 70-200 f4. They both take Sigma Extenders 1.4x and 2x. If needs be I add an extension tube or two. What is lost in IQ is made up for in convenience of a zoom. I can hand hold the 100-400 with 2x Extender. Using a Canon R7 I hand hold a combo that gives ff equivalent of 1280mm, and I still have a min focus of < 2m. IQ is acceptable for me. A combination of technique and conditions at the time makes it a bit pointless worrying about it.
