They are commonly called Mormon Crickets due to their association with the early days of the Latter Day Saints in Utah. They are not crickets, not are the locusts. They are, in fact, flightless members of the Katydid family. There was a major event going on on our recent trip to Dinosaur National Monument. These little beasties were EVERYWHERE, carpeting the desert and the roadway to the point you hear them crunching unter the tires of the cars. Many thousands of them. They are not pretty, nor are they a target species for photographers. But, they are a major food source for birds, lizards, and other small critters of all types. They were there so I got a few shots in case you are not familiar with these little cuties.
