While we’re all waiting on Nikon to release a Z90 or Z80 or whatever the crop sensor D500 replacement will be, I’m wondering how well the 400 f4.5 would work on the old D500 +FTZ adapter. Anyone tried this? What kind of image quality did you ged

The FTZ adapter doesn’t work in reverse. It only allows F mount lenses to be used on mirrorless cameras. It does not allow Z mount lenses to be used on DSLRs.

As others have posted, there is no way to adapt Z mount lenses for use on DSLRs. The FTZ adapter is basically an extension tube to get the right spacing when an F mount lens is mounted on a mirrorless camera. It takes up the same space as the mirror box assembly of a DSLR that’s missing on a mirrorless camera. If someone did build the kind of adapter you’re looking for the mirrorless lens would focus a bit closer than normal but it would no longer focus near infinity or at long distances. Basically the back end of the lens would be too far from the DSLR sensor due to that extra mirror box distance.

It’s a one way street, DSLR lenses can be adapted to mirrorless cameras but not the other way around.

I've read somewhere about pairing the 400 f4.5S with a Zf Zfc [edited]. The DX crop factor gives an equivalent 600mm FoV.
This prime is ready and waiting if indeed Nikon is planning a high end DX MILC embodying the nuggets of Z9 technology.
Yet again, there's an active dpr thread discussing this possibility, and likely it's not a coincidence Nikon funded a PetaPixel visit to their new Tokyo Headquarters and Museum.

I don’t know of a Nikon update to the d500 as of yet. Unless it were to have at least 26mp I wouldn’t be interested. All the good glass is FF and you get more light, a larger framing area especially useful with BIF so unless you are looking to save hard disk space I don’t see much advantage. Lighter weight I suppose but the lens is where most of the weight is . Talking long glass here.

The D500 longer flange than a Z doesnt normally allow it to use the 400 f4.5 lens.
It is possible to adapt the lens to a DSLR body but you will also lose the ability to focus to infinity or near infinity

I compared several MILC lenses to their DSLR counterparts and found the mirrorless glass to be heavier.

For me the weight is about the same. D850 vs z8, 500pf vs 600pf. The TCs do weigh more but they are so much better. The 400f4.5 is heavier than the 300pf for sure but much more capable overall. The 100-400z vs the 80-400 are fairly close. Once again the 100-400 is vastly superior.
