I know one fellow said he made the update to the D500 and a couple other bodies he had. My question for those who made the update did it reset all of your settings back to factory default?

I know it's a good idea to always backup the settings prior to doing any kind of firmware update like this but just curious if it put the camera back to factory defaults of if it leaves your settings (like settings for back button autofocus, bank A / B, etc.) alone?

Thanks,
Jeff

Snapshot2020 and VStammer, thanks for the responses. I'll back up my settings anyway just wanted to know how much work was involved after.

Thanks again.

thanks everyone, I did the update and it went smoothly.

now, if I can just figure out why my 200-500 has decided tonight was the night to give up the ghost...

What part gave up the Ghost? Focusing or VR?
I started a new thread on it. Just yesterday it started not zooming all the way back to 200. I can zoom out to 500mm just fine but when I bring it back to 200mm, it stops somewhere between the 300mm mark and the 200mm mark. It's strange, it never did that before.

I had a similar problem with a mk1 Canon 100-400 turned out to be internal baffles coming loose and wedging the zoom
Whatever they may be although it was not my fault I still got charged .

I had the same problem with my 200-500 a year ago. Nikon fixed it within a week cost free under the 5-year-guarantee.
I like your result a lot better than Robin's experience with Canon. I hope they will fix it under the warranty. It is just a year old. I sent it to Nikon today. Hopefully it will be back soon.

HI i'm trying to install the latest up date for my Nikon D500.
Nikon says full instructions of how to set it up, go to their site. Apart from saying to install it twice and agreeing to their terms there doesn't seem to be any instructions as to getting the update into the camera.
Could anyone please give a step by step guide to installing to my camera.
So far I've downloaded from Nikon to downloads on my computer. I've then copied it to a formatted SD card plugged into the computer .
A second Icon F-D500-V130M has appeared on screen along with my SD card Icon ?. The SD card does seem to contain the same Icon.
I'm assuming i can put the card into my camera but then how do i install ? or as usual have i got it all wrong.

Thanks for any help:mad:

In the UK, from Nikon UK>Srevice and Support>Download Centre>type in D500>Search>Firmware>

This then shows two available firmware. The LC is the lens distortion the other one is for the camera. If you instal the LC firmware do it wirh no lens on the camera.

Here is the camera firmware page with instructions:

Open the Updating the Camera Firmware section.

I guess wherever you are the Nikon sites should all have the same layout.

Make sure that the firmware binary (BIN) file is in the Root Directory (top level) of the SD card, not in the DCIM folder etc.

After installing the SD card back in the camera, go to the Set Up Menu then select Firmware version which is last option listed. You should then see an update option, click this and it will update. May take a few minutes and make sure you've got a battery with plenty of charge!

I have a few XQD cards that I use with my D500. I've never had a problem with one and find them fast enough to shoot in CH for several seconds. Is there any other benefit to upgrading the firmware if I have no intention of buying CFExpress cards?

Version 1.3 (new update for the D500) not only added support for CFexpress, but also fixed this "bug":Fixed an issue that caused both the Entire frame and Background only options for Custom Setting e3 Exposure comp. for flash in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU to produce the same results as Entire frame during flash photography.

It's not clear if this issue with custom setting e3 was occurring all the time or just under certain circumstances.

Thanks for the info although I've never had an issue--hardly use flash.
