I have my D500 setup for back-button focus. In the menu I have A8 set to AF-On only. F1 is set to AF-On button set to single point AF, joystick to group AF, and all other button functions off. It works fine, as I only have to move my thumb slightly to switch between single point and group. I almost never use any other focus method. Always AF-C. But the group AF 4 little squares are there in the viewfinder when ever I turn the camera on, and stay there (even though they don't do anything) when I half press the shutter. Is there any way to have no focus points in the viewfinder at all until I use my thumb to press the AF-On or joystick buttons?

Thanks, Richard

Not that I'm aware of. You can have a single focus point box when you select Single Point AF Area mode but with a Dynamic or Group mode you'll see a set of boxes.

Personally I'm glad it works that way. If I didn't know where the selected AF points were in the viewfinder prior to engaging BBAF it would be easy to miss my focus target (e.g. eyes) and have the lens rack out to infinity or other distance if the selected AF points weren't where I expected them to be. IOW, having the selected AF points shown (or a group representation of them) helps in terms of making sure they're over my desired focusing target prior to engaging BBAF.
