Damselflies ~ any way to improve, render etc?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

D4 + 600 F/4 + 1.4 TC. BG is very busy water with reflections and growth all over. Lens was too long to get reflections 100% reversed in. Now if I was a PS fundi, I would have extended the reflection at the bottom but this is way beyond my ability. Also, I have no way and clue as to remove the colours created by the underwater plants that seeps through the gauze of the wings. F/11; 1/1250; ISO 1000; -1,3 EV. Went for a square crop because the water was just awful towards the right.

This is an interesting photo with the repeating patterns of the mating damselflies, and their reflections, and the lovely warm light. To my eye it is a little too tightly cropped on the left and right. Is there room to open up both sides and maybe a bit on the bottom?

Try reducing the contrast a bit and then darkening a bit, that might help. You'll have to try several different degrees of each to find the best ones. I'd also crop more off the left and less from the bottom. A lower camera angle might have been better, but you can't change that.

Thank you for taking the time to comment, I appreciate it! No space at the bottom. The water is so dirty that the amount of work to fix it in PS is just not worth it, hence the square crop. What I am looking for is a magician that can tell me how to get the complete reflection.

At some point one needs to decide if the photo is worth all the effort of manipulation and repair. Not saying this is or isn’t, only you can decide that. I know I for one reason or another become attached to some shots and try everything to make them right, and eventually I am forced to admit they just aren’t worth it. Again, completely up to you.
