Some call those rays of light "God rays."

Me getting this shot was such an accident. I had driven over four hours to photograph a high school band's trip with the football team. It was mid-August in Birmingham and at one time, the thermometer on the track read over 120 F. It was brutal, and of course, there wasn't a cloud in the sky. The game was the second that day and by halfrime, the concession stands were out of every kind of drink that they had, save fountain soda, as well as ice.

When it was over, I was exhausted and very thirsty, I got to my car and headed home. I intended to stop for something to drink right away but ended up on the interstate and headed home. The first two places I stopped to eat were way too crowded, so I drove further until I stopped at a restaurant at this exit. I was going to get my dinner to go, but ran into someone I knew also returning home and decided to sit down with them to eat.

That delay was enough for me to be there when this sunset presented itself and I waited to watch it and took several shots. A reminder that sometimes we need to slow down and just be patient, and life presents rewards to us that we don't expect.
