I’ve never seen that before! I‘d have thought they’d be nice and dry in their hives.
Unfortunately, this little guy was dead when I found him. Judging by the surroundings, my guess would be he got caught on that one strand of spider web you can see in the photo, tried to escape, grabbed onto the bottom of that leaf, and died there, still grasping the leaf. I’ve seen a handful of honeybees and bumblebees covered in dew first thing in the morning, and they’ve all been dead, so I’m with you…they’re nice and warm and dry in their hives…unless they’re dead.
