Nearly wiped out in North America in the late 1800s, when its plumes were sought for use in fashion, the Great Egret returned after early conservationists stopped the slaughter and protected its colonies.

Snowies even more so. When I was growing up in SC in the 70s we never saw snowies while great egrets were fairly common. Honestly I can't say that the numbers of great egrets have noticeably changed whereas the previously non-existent snowies are now common.
