In Australia, Nikon warranties their lenses for 5 years. Here in the states , it's only 1 year(what happened to their US 5 yr warranty). What's up with that? Should I buy from dear on OZ?

In Belgium is standard warranty 2 years, that is if you are a consumer. There are (camera) retailers, especially in the Netherlands, that extend the warranty to 5 years. The additional 3 years is covered by the retailer through a repair shop of their choosing and under following conditions:
- warranty only under name of the original purchaser
- not valid for damage, loss, theft or wear by professional usage

You need to buy from the country you live in to get warranty service if needed. Assuming you are American, buying a lens from Australia would not cover you. Plus, even if it did, would you actually ship your gear to the other side of the world (presumably at your cost) just for service? I believe there are extended warranty plans you can pay for to get longer coverage, but I personally don't think they are worth it (whether for a camera or washing machine or car or whatever).

Many times the warranty is based on the legal minimums in a given country/area. And, correspondingly, the cost of the item is adjusted. Same as return privileges and other legal requirements (such as tax rates). It’s one of several reasons why the same item costs differently in different areas.

Nikon subsidiaries determine what the warranty will be. For years, Nikon Canada offered 2 year warranties on bodies while Nikon USA was only one. The basic Nikon Corporate warranty is 1 year but they allow their subsidiaries to determine if they want to offer more. Cost cutting ended the Nikon USA 5 year warranty extension a number of years ago.
