Dropped my 300mm PF - no VR :-(

I managed to drop my 2 month old 300mm PF lens last night and am livid with myself! I generally look after my gear very well and have never dropped any gear before.

I dropped it onto concrete from shoulder height with the FTZ adapter attached when wrestling with my backpack. The lens hood was reversed at the time but attached. It looks like the lens hood, lens cap, FTZ lens cap and FTZ took the brunt of the impact.

AF still works fine and testing the lens on a tripod I don't see any degeneration in performance from the lens however, VR no longer seems to work regardless of what position I put the switch. I've tested it on my Z6ii and D500 so I know it's not an issue with the also-dropped FTZ.

The lens is still under warranty but I reckon this will be a repair that I have to pay for, does anyone have a rough idea how much Nikon would likely charge to replace the VR module in this lens or what to expect from Nikon UK when repairing this?

On the birght side, at least my Z6ii wasn't attached at the time!!!

Sorry to hear that, I have dropped an expensive lens on a couple of occasions and it’s amazing how they always find a very hard substrate to fall on.
I guess I know how you’re feeling and hope Nikon will sympathise.

The VR in that lens barely works anyways...maybe better off without it....:p

Sorry bad joke....

I've had to have two IS units replaced from drops of Canon lenses (100-400 and 100-400II). Nikon could be totally different but my costs were in the $300-500 CAD range. And both times Canon knew it was dropped....NIkon claims everything they receive is dropped so yeah, you will be out of pocket for sure. :(

I had the VR go out on my 300PF and I think it was likely due to rough handling on my part. Though Nikon would charge me for sure but they didn't! I may hav jus been lucky though.

Sucks but stuff happens. Two years ago last week I took a fall with my D5 and 70-200 EFL. Both appeared ok, everything worked but I suspected internal damage, at the least damaged mounts as the barrel of the lens hit a steel rail. Between both mounts and other internal damage I was in the $1200 ballpark. Be prepared for more than just VR.

When I dropped/dislodged the lens mount on my D500 a few years back I sent it to Nikon for repair. For what appeared to be a flat base rate of $350 I got back a beautifully cleaned and repaired camera body. They wanted the same to check out the lens, but it was still usable. (Of course this happened at the worst possible time on a ship off South Georgia island.... TG for the old backup camera! I learned many things on that trip!!)
