This unlucky catfish didn't stand a chance. Interestingly, no look back and the series continued for dozens of frames. Very pleased that the Z8/800 PF combination didn't exhibit any of the wandering strike AF! :)

Great set, indeed! Jealous of the shots you guys get there, maybe someday I'll be there.

And funny, looks like Rick is using the first image in your series for his avatar! (I know he's not.)
Haha. Think I've been using mine since Nov/Dec. Funny, he said he was on the fishing pier. I was directly above where he was on a little lookout nook because the Pier was closed due to icy conditions. :)

Great set. Sorry I missed you.
Thank you and likewise. Ever since I moved from the DC area, I try to make it back as often as time allows. It's a real gem and you are fortunate to live nearby.
A nice clean looking bird and well captured. Good job.
Much appreciated. It was the Z8/800, I just saw him in time and panned appropriately.
Wonderful set. 800 or 600 or something else? How far out was this one?
800 PF. Surprised that the exif isn't displaying. The only strike on this side of the island today and I would estimate about 30-40 yards though I would have to look in exif tool. The island is about 120 yards out and by that distance, the atmospherics are pretty tough. I have a lovely composition of a GBH trying to steal a fish from an eagle on the wall while he/she is being attacked from above by another eagle though at 300 yards and having to crop significantly it's pretty crappy.

The island is 260+ yards, depending on your location on the fence. :) At mid fence I shot to the point on the left side of the island and it is 287yards from that angle.

I stand corrected and never measured it. Maybe next time I'll take a rangefinder to take some better measurements. It was a guesstimate and a bad one at that!

That ain’t chump change. Wow.
That's why strikes on this side of the island are so venerated. The distances are insane, though if one wants to see a bunch of eagles in the Mid-Atlantic/parts of the MW, short of traveling to Homer, I don't think there is a larger collection available for public viewing. I know that around Lake Erie, on the DTE property about 200 Eagles hang out in the winter though it's a no go for the public. Likewise, there is the Sandy Island reserve near St. Louis though it's closed from November-March.

Would you mind sharing other distances as well such as how far to the wall, the rocks, etc?
I didn't write them down, grrr, but will take it the next time I go. My rangefinder goes to 600 yds/mtrs and will not lock on the farside rocks. I don't remember what the wing wall was.

It's interesting how poor I was in estimating distances and usually, I'm a bit more accurate. I had guessed the Island was 120 yards away and Rick has correctly measured it at 260. The EXIF suggests it was 289 from where I was shooting though I'm not sure about the accuracy of the exif lens distance. Every "far away shot" even at distances beyond the island were recorded as 289. Based on the exif, I had underestimated the distance of the strike by a factor of 2. At least I am consistently wrong?

Great sequence! Is it starting to pick up again? I know the spring time tends to be pretty good but I haven't had much luck.
Yes, the number of eagles has doubled or tripled in the last couple of days. I suspect that when the shad start running in the next 2-3 weeks, it will take off. They are more attune to these things than we are. Good luck, and I wish that I had the time to return.
