In other locations (e.g. Edmonton) I've seen flocks of Cedar Waxwings in the hundreds, and on a couple of occasions it was easily thousands (and -30C). A few days ago I came upon a small group (maybe a a couple dozen) and I watched them in real time literally strip clusters of elderberries from their stems and then move on to the next bunch. Took many photos even though virtually every opportunity had the birds buried in the foliage or the berry bunches. Nicely this youngster was caught with his beak open as he yelled, 'please sir, can I have some more?" :D Until processing this shot I had been unaware they have hooked beaks. Few hundred shots, this the only one remotely useable -- gotta love digital photography :)
