I would agree. Nothing wrong about a portrait type shot, but this composition looks odd to me. If you cropped this heavily, I would go back to the RAW and move the crop significantly to the right to reveal the back of the bird + a small amount of the background. You have very complementary BG, your focus and DOF is great; show it off more.

Thank you both for the comments. I would love to show more of the bird, but here is what showing all of it adds.

The feeder the bird is perched upon detracts from the image, IMO. I'm planning to put in place a natural rest for the birds approaching and leaving the feeder, but planning it doesn't make it happen. There is a Leyland Cypress tree nearby that the birds use for cover as they go to and from the feeder, and they tend to use that even if there is another perch closer to the feeder.

A quick change in LR. I recropped (I too have many shots that have less than ideal composition-you can only do so much with cropping) and brought up the exposure on the shadows on the belly, breast and neck. See if this strikes you any better.

For grins, this is the whole photo after manipulation in LR.

Have you ever used the Transform tool in LrC? You can enlarge the bird and move it around, up/down and sideways to get it where you want it, then remove any remaining image you don't want with the LrC spotting tool or PS if you use that. Sometimes LrC will do a good job if you can encircle the entire spot you want to remove while first holding down the command (Mac) key and guiding the tool where you want it to go. Just my thought on it. Nice shot, really beautiful portrait of the bird. I agree with the others that the crop shown just does not work well.

I have not, but will look into it. I can also import the photo into Photoshop Elements and use layers to manipulate the image.

If the humidity and temperatures go down a bit around here soon, I'm just going to get my camera back out and try to get a better version of the shot. (98 F with >85% RH here today. I take the camera outside and everything fogs up like all-get-out!)
