Fieldcraft

I thought it might be useful for some of us to have a fieldcraft thread. So...

Is there an ethical way to attract foxes? I know they are here, I see them zipping around at full speed, and I see their tracks in the snow. I know that generally one should never feed wildlife, other than birds. I did a little googling, one website said sure, just "put out some meat"!! Another re-afirmed the "never" rule. I would appreciate any tips, thank you.

I personally wouldn't attempt to bait mammals and especially not predators. I'd focus on trying to determine what they are eating now and where they are drinking and in the appopriate season where they are denning. That may take some research or field time observing them or talking to locals, especially biologists that understand how they survive in your local environment. But my best luck with canines including foxes has been figuring out at least a bit of their routines and figure out where they hunt, drink and bed down. Sometimes tracks can give you clues to that, especially in the snow.

If you can determine any kind of repeatable pattern, even if its as simple as you've seen them crossing the same meadow several times at various times of day then you have a big head start on where to be and when to be there to photograph them.

I'm going with DRwyoming. I think it comes down to doing you homework Learn about the foxes and then learn about there habits in your area. You might need to spend some time waiting for them to pass by. Always have your camera read so you can pick it up and turn it on pull the lens cap and shoot. Some people even try to pre-focus. If you do all this right their is only one more thing you need, You will need some luck.
Happy Hunting.

I shot foxes for about 3 years in a city park where a woman was feeding them during the winter. I sat in the car with the window down with the 800mm on a bean bag. Coyotes moved in and the foxes moved out.
