Thank's a lot DR for your feedback! Looking for birds near a pond, I was intrigued by the shape of the frost pattern around the leaf; any explanation?

Best guess is that it's related to the way the leaf shades the underlying ice on sunny days and similarly reduces both evaporation and radiation losses to a clear night sky.

The exact mechanism is beyond me. But it looks a lot like snow crystal structure changes we see in avalanche science that has a lot to do with daytime vs nighttime radiation patterns leading to things like hoar frost formation, near surface faceted snow grains, firnspiegel and other similar things. These result from water vapor migration on snow and ice crystals which is heavily impacted by things like radiation to a clear night sky and the radiation from the sun both of which I'd expect to be impacted by the leaf.

Thank you! Very interesting! As I can remember, this photo was taken early in the morning after a clear night and first sub zero temperature (in degrees celcius), which is corroborating your explanation.
