Had yet to take a shot with my D780 until I saw some interesting clouds moving through the area late afternoon. Had a 50mm f/1.4 manual focus prime mounted; that combo weighed a whopping 2.5 pounds. SWEET!!! Swapped out the 50mm for a 28mm f/2.8 manual focus prime then waited for dark to take some holiday decoration shots, with a tripod, of course. In "Q" mode, for sure the D780 is quieter than my D850 in the same mode. After dark, shot at ISO 100 then ISO 400, for comparison sake. Also changed the white balance from AUTO to tungsten because I thought the whites had an slight orange cast to them. I still want to shoot an AF-S Nikkor 28mm f/1.4 prime pro lens side by side vs. my old manual focus prime to see for myself if it is worth the near $2K to upgrade to the pro 28mm. So far I am pleased with the clarity and sharpness of the shots taken with both old primes, especially the 28mm; it has delivered nicely when on my D850 especially after dark in the past. It is a challenge for me shooting in MANUAL mode after dark; not so much in daylight. On my testing agenda, shoot video and time lapse with those old primes soon. I have a 24-70 f/2.8 non VR Nikkor and 70-200 f/2.8 current iteration Nikkor at my disposal waiting their chance to show what they can do on the D780.
