Even though it was pretty cool and windy with a mix of mist and snowflakes, this coltsfoot was the first wildflower I photographed this spring; it's closed because the sky was cloudy, no sun. Olympus M10 ii, 7Artisans 60mm macro lens, 1/400, f/11, ISO 1000.

So is coltsfoot another name for dandelion? Sure looks like one...

They're a exotic yellow composite like dandelions, but their flowers are smaller and they bloom earlier in the spring. Coltsfoot can't compete with other plants so they normally only grow right on the edge of roads or other really disturbed sites. The leaves are pretty large, 4-6" across and shaped like a horse's hoof but with a few large teeth along the edge.

Same Daisy family (Asteracea) but that is one gigantic family.
